English Alive 50 years of writing by South African high school students

English Alive 50 years of writing by South African high school students
Editor: Robin Malan

As the title announces, this anthology marks the 50th anniversary of English Alive. The compiler Robin Malan worked through all fifty editions of the annual anthologies and selected 230 pieces to go into this anthology.

Two things are to be noted:

The first is the astonishing over-view it gives of what has been happening in and to South Africa over these fifty momentous years. As you read through students’ pieces, you see them reacting to and reflecting their ‘here and now’. They present to us a remarkable encapsulation of the ‘zeitgeist’, the spirit of the times, of this half-century of South Africa’s history.

Second, it is fascinating to see how many English Alive contributors went on to become professional published writers of one sort or another, or excelled in some related field. These writers have notes on their careers at the end of the anthology.
